    Sinopse

The text Character Recognition Advances presents advances in character recognition that cover wide range of topics on different aspects of character recognition. Character recognition is a process which allows computers to recognize written or printed characters such as numbers or letters and to change them into a form that the computer can use. Concepts and applications of support vector machine (SVM) classifiers to character recognition have been discussed in first chapter. In second chapter, we explain the usefulness of personal dictionary on offline character recognition using proposed adaptive dictionary. Third chapter proposes a new approach for the automatic generation of the training set for the handwritten recognizer of a given person. Online handwritten Chinese/Japanese character recognition has been introduced in fourth chapter. In fifth chapter, the problem of handwritten character recognition has been tackled with multiresolution technique using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and Euclidean distance metric (EDM). A signal-processing-based technique with its applications into the development of automated character recognition has been introduced in sixth chapter. In seventh chapter, we present a character recognition method for virtual scenes (air characters) and vehicle number plate recognition using neural networks and evolutionary computation. Eighth chapter discusses how to segment text images into individual single characters to facilitate later OCR kernel processing. Ninth chapter discusses how to apply OCR in the processing of thermal images with temperature scales. Tenth chapter proposes a robust, touchless, palmprint recognition system which is based on color palmprint images. For support vector machines, decision tree as an accelerator has been described in eleventh chapter. The aim of twelfth chapter is to test several feature extraction algorithm and classification method using the same data base. Stroke-based cursive character recognition h
