ON THE ORIGINS OF HUMAN EMOTIONS

The ability to use a wide array of emotions, says Turner (sociology, U. of California-Riverside), evolved long before spoken language, and in fact constituted a pre-adaptation for the speech and culture that developed among later hominids. He arguesthat the key evolutionary breakthrough for humans was the neurological wiring of the brain needed to communicate emotional disposition through body language.
