SCULPTURE NOW

SCULPTURE NOW

The word sculpture is no longer used merely to refer to dustable objects located on a plinth; today the term is applied to works that can be comprised of materials as diverse as light, smoke, sound, electricity, the human body and the artist's own blood. While there are many books that attempt to survey contemporary art there are few that concentrate on sculpture. In a post-modern, highly digitised age, the term itself may seem to have outlived its relevance yet, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, there is more work than ever being produced that can be defined as sculptural, much of it clearly making reference to a tradition that stretches back through pop and minimalism to the beginnings of modernism and beyond.
