TAPIES THE COMPLETE WORKS VOLUME 3 : 1969-1975

Little English-language writing exists on the accomplished Spanish abstractionist Antoni Tapies. Roland Penrose's readable and somewhat critical study, Tapies (Rizzoli, 1979), is out of print and Luis Permanyer's Tapies and the New Culture ( LJ 2/1/87) is narrow in scope and barely comprehensible. A new survey would therefore have been welcome. Instead, we have the first volume of a projected six-volume catalogue raisonne. A mercifully brief foreword is followed by Agusti's meticulous catalog of over 900 paintings, drawings, and sculptures, arranged by year. The 133 color plates look good; many of the over 800 black-and-white illustrations are murky. The sponsor, the Barcelona Tapies Foundation, expects to publish a volume per year. At this price, however, only the most comprehensive collections will contemplate ordering.- Margot Karp, Pratt Inst. Lib., Brooklyn, N.Y.
