'Advanced Soil Mechanics' provides a general review of grain-size distribution, nature of water in clay, consistency of cohesive soils, weight-volume relationships and soil classification systems. It also covers the fundamental concepts of elasticity, equations of equilibrium and compatibility as they relate to the determination of stress and displacement in a soil medium. Relationships based on the theory of elasticity are presented to show how to estimate the stress and displacement in a soil mass due to various types of loading. The book sets out, in a logical and sequential manner, novel or refined procedures as they relate to hydraulic conductivity of granular and cohesive soils and flow through porous media, consolidation, shear strength and settlement of foundations.

This third edition has new coverage on clay minerals, including the nature of water in clay and repulsive potential; elastic displacement relationships due to various types of loading; electro-osmosis and electro-osmotic coefficient of permeability; visco-elastic consolidation models; rate-process theory of creep in clay; and elastic settlement of shallow foundations.
