Frans Krajcberg (1921-2017) foi uma figura fundamental na arte brasileira do século 20, pioneiro na integração entre arte e ecologia. Foi precursor em dar visibilidade às questões ambientais, trabalhando a partir de resqui´cios de troncos, cipo´s, rai´zes e madeira calcinada. Naturalizado brasileiro, Krajcberg nasceu na Polônia em uma família judia e chegou ao Brasil nos anos 1950, onde desenvolveu seu trabalho como artista. Mesmo mantendo viagens periódicas a Paris, passou a viver no litoral da Bahia, no seu sítio em Nova Viçosa, e sua consciência ecológica se intensificou conforme viajava pelo território brasileiro, ampliando as possibilidades materiais de seu trabalho. Após testemunhar a devastação de áreas florestadas na região amazônica, engajou-se em denunciar queimadas e a violência do extrativismo, conferindo ao seu trabalho um cunho altamente político. Krajcberg construiu, ao longo de mais de seis décadas, uma obra absolutamente singular, com rigor formal escultórico e pictórico, tridimensional ou bidimensional, articulando arte, natureza, e ativismo ambiental e preservacionista. Frans Krajcberg (1921–2017) was a key figure in 20th century Brazilian art, a pioneer in the integration of art and ecology. Krajcberg was a trailblazer in raising visibility around environmental issues, working with remnants of tree trunks, vines, and charred wood. A naturalized Brazilian citizen, he was born in Poland in a Jewish family and arrived in Brazil in the 1950s, where he developed his work as an artist. Although he continued to travel periodically to Paris, Krajcberg settled at his farm in Nova Viçosa, on the coast of Bahia, and his ecological awareness intensified as he traveled throughout Brazil, expanding the material possibilities of his work. After witnessing the devastation of forested areas in the Amazon region, he engaged in denouncing forest fires and the violence of extractivism, adding a highly political aspect to his production. Over more than six decades, Krajcberg built an absolutely unique body of work, with a pronounced formal rigor in both sculptural and pictorial forms—three- and two-dimensional—, articulating art, nature, as well as environmental and preservationist activism. This catalog accompanies the exhibition Frans Krajcberg: Rediscovering the Tree, held at MASP, and features new contributions from authors who have dedicated themselves to researching the artist’s work, highlighting how the interest in nature, his main workspace, unfolded in his deep commitment as an activist.
