INTRODUCTION TO THE DEVOUT LIFE

Placing ourselves in the position of Philothea, who personifies the soul eager to serve God, we can guide ourselves in the pursuit of holiness through the teachings of St. Francis de Sales on spiritual life, which reflect the perennial wisdom of the Church in guiding souls. The Bishop of Geneva teaches her what true devotion is and how to begin and remain in a state of grace. In order to sanctify oneself amidst ordinary duties, Philothea is instructed to establish a rule of life and devotional practices.

Throughout the work, divided into five parts, the holy Doctor of the Church describes the spiritual exercises necessary to progress in love for God and in virtues. Additionally, he advises Philothea on combating temptations and how to use prayer and the sacraments to elevate the soul to God, showing that the devout life should not be confined only to monasteries and religious houses but should also be a reality and, moreover, the essence of the diverse circumstances of all the faithful.


St. Francis de Sales (Castle of Sales, Thorens-Glières, August 21, 1567 — Lyon, December 28, 1622) was a Catholic priest and Bishop of Geneva. He holds the title of Doctor of the Church and is the titular and patron of the Salesian family (founded by St. John Bosco). He wrote extensively on spiritual formation, with his main works being Introduction to the Devout Life and Treatise on the Love of God.
