Nearly every English, American and Continental pocket watch produced from 1800 to 1940 can be found in this encyclopedic publication, which features 32 color and more than 1,000 black and white plates. Watches are introduced with brief histories and mechanical descriptions. Plates are accompanied by detailed information on marks and makers, and multiple images are often used to present the face, back plate and movement for each. The thoroughness of this excellent reference may be attributed to its author's position as past president of the Antiquarian Section of the British Horological Institute and former chairman of the Horological Society. Perhaps most notable, however, is the book's concentration on affordable examples, which remain accessible in today's market.
