The second edition of this book is intended to extend the strengths of the first. Some of the changes are: • More than 200 new exercises have been added. • A new section on point estimation has been added to Chapter 4. • The material on histograms in Chapter 1 has been completely revised. • Chapter 2 now contains a discussion of Chebyshev’s inequality. • Chapter 4 now contains a discussion of the uniform distribution. • The section on the normal distribution contains a discussion on linear functions of normal random variables. • Chapter 7 contains additional material on the correlation coefficient. • Chapter 10 contains a discussion of the relationship between control charts and hypothesis tests. • The exposition has been improved in a number of places. Also new for this edition is the ARIS online course management system. ARIS provides automatic grading of student assignments and keeps a record of students’ grades. In addition, ARIS contains problems for student practice, along with Java applets that allow students to interactively explore ideas in the text. About the Author William Navidi is Professor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines. He received the B.A. degree in mathematics from New College, the M.A. in mathematics from Michigan State University, and the Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Navidi has authored more than 50 research papers both in statistical theory and in a wide variety of applications includingcomputer networks, epidemiology, molecular biology, chemical engineering, and geophysics.
